Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre and Studio
About
Following the closure of the much-loved Alhambra Theatre in Doornfontein, Pieter Toerien’s Montecasino Theatre opened in November 2000 with a launch season that included the hit productions DEFENDING THE CAVEMAN, DEATH OF A SALESMAN, THE GRADUATE, STONES IN HIS POCKETS and many more! The initial auditorium held 320 seats. The Main Theatre has hosted a plethora of hit shows over the years and launched many SA performers to stardom! Highlights include JOSEPH AND THE AMAZING TECHNICOLOR DREAMCOAT, JC SUPERSTAR, PROOF, A HANDFUL OF KEYS, SUNSET BOULEVARD, EVITA, CHESS, HAIR, LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS, CABARET, HISTORY BOYS. In 2003, following great demand for another smaller more intimate venue, Pieter Toerien opened the 150-seater Studio Theatre, which has become a very popular home to hits such as TRAVELS WITH MY AUNT, 39 STEPS, JEEVES & WOOSTER in PERFECT NONSENSE and ANDRE THE HILARIOUS HYPNOTIST. In August 2011 our Main Theatre underwent a major refurb and the seating capacity was increased to 400.
Please note: there is NO DISABLED ACCESS to the Studio Theatre

Pieter Toerien’s Theatre on the Bay
About
Imagine going to the theatre, arriving in the setting sun, being met with glasses tinkling with ice, champagne corks popping and then a performance by top South African stars in an internationally acclaimed play.” – Pieter Toerien, 1988.
Behind a velvet curtain that floats atop the theatre like the physical representation of an invocation to suspend disbelief and give yourself over to a world of imagination made real. Surely this is one of this hemisphere’s most striking theatre facades – we go through the Theatre doors and into the auditorium. Before you, the stage. A stage that has seen countless Cape Town firsts, and even a world premiere or ten; that led the way in South African theatre with farces and comedies, secured Broadway and West End coups and piloted the small-stage, full-cast musical. This stage has played host to legends of South African theatre – actors, actresses, directors, writers and behind-the-scene magicians of set-design, lighting and sound – and also provided a stepping stone for aspirant professionals who are now household names. It is a stage waiting for your eyes to behold what it will reveal.
Welcome to Theatre on the Bay, the Sidedish Theatre Bisto and the Bill Flynn VIP Room (and The Cookie Monster In Me).

From the curving splendor of Cape Town’s Twelve Apostles you see it, as though it was always meant to be there. THE SIDEDISH THEATRE BISTRO
1st Floor
“It is tempting to view pre-theatre dining as a side show; as something diminished in value when compared with the thespian genius that will later transport the audience to another place. Yet for us, this is it. We have only this opportunity to add to your evening of entertainment, so we’d rather view it as the overture; not the focal point of the night, admittedly, but an important one nevertheless.
Sidedish is the bistro dining off-shoot of Dish Food & Social (www.dishfood.co.za). In this guise we have catered for everything from society weddings to corporate breakfasts and large events such as the Nederburg Auction, Loerie Awards and J&B Met. Consequently, the food we cook covers a wide repertoire of culinary traditions. All of it though, is founded on a love for food and respect for great ingredients. The menu represents our taste in cuisine, which we hope resonates positively with your likes and preferences. If not, we ask that you please tell us while you’re still here, so that we have the opportunity of remedying the situation. Think of it this way: while we can put your steak back under the grill for another couple of minutes, you’re unlikely to get the cast of EVITA to repeat a chorus!
The archetypal Caveman ate for sustenance only. The men among us may still be restricted to using a limited number of words on a daily basis, but now food also embodies entertainment, recreation, art and even some science. So it’s kind of cool to be cooking alongside Pieter Toerien’s various theatrical productions.
Bon Appetit!” – Andrea and Oscar Foulkes
