I’d Call It A Co-Incidence

It’s a small world after all …

The Savanna Comics’ Choice Awards take place at the Montecasino Teatro tomorrow night and co-incidentally two of the nominees will be appearing on stage for Pieter Toerien Productions later this year!

Alan Committie, who has worked with Pieter Toerien since the days of ‘The Clown Jewels’, has gone on to present a portfolio of shows at our theatres in JHB and CPT, including ‘TV or Not TV’, ‘Titanic on Ice’, ‘Bigger Better Faster’, ‘Fully Committied’, ‘Happily Ever Laughter’ and ‘No, Seriously’. He has just finished a very successful run as Seymour Krelborn in the KicksArt production of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, presented by PTP.

Alan broke the Box Office earlier this year with his new one-man stand-up comedy, ‘The Sound Of Laughter’, and due to public demand, returns to Theatre on the Bay (sorry Gautengers, only here in CPT) from 16 September – 03 October.

Alan is nominated in the Flying Solo Comic Award Category at the Choice Awards and is also the director of this year’s ceremony!

Schalk Bezuidenhout, the 2013 Newcomer Award Winner is back this year, nominated in the Intermediate Comic Award Category. “I quickly became conscious of the fact that he could still be a proud Afrikaans boy, whilst wearing skinny jeans”. Schalk appears in the upcoming, hotly-awaited musical version of Pieter-Dirk Uys’s boere-seepie ‘Die Van Aardes Van Grootoor’ at Theatre on the Bay from 09 December – 09 January ’16, followed by a season at the Montecasino Theatre from 15 January – 21 Febraury.

I had the opportunity of watching the first read- and sing-through with the cast in July, and was surprised at the diversity of the beautiful music that has been composed by Godfrey Johnson, each song melodically melding seamlessly with the narrative of the story. And it’s funny. Very funny. Pieter-Dirk has created bold characters, as brash as the veld they live in and just as memorable.
