SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN 2017-03-18T21:21:56+00:00

Project Description

SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN

Making a splash in South Africa this year, Pieter Toerien proudly presents SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN, based on the MGM film.

With all the incredible choreography, buoyant songs and witty wisecracks of the original. Plus fantastic costumes, awesome ‘triple threat’* performers and live rain on stage at every performance!

Starring Grant Almirall (Frankie Vallie in Jersey Boys) as Don Lockwood | Bethany Dickson (Grease, The Sound of Music) as Kathy Selden | Steven Van Wyk (The Sound of Music) as Cosmo Brown.

Splash Zone Weather Warning: There is a strong chance of showers and getting wet in the first 3 rows (A – C) of the stalls, although patrons in these rows will each be given a rain poncho. Be part of the action and make SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN your summer cool-down place!

* A ‘triple threat’ performer excels at singing, acting and dancing.

Don Lockwood is a silent film star with humble roots as a musician, dancer and stunt man. Don barely tolerates his vapid leading lady, Lina Lamont, who is convinced that their screen romance is real.

After Hollywood’s” first talking picture, ‘The Jazz Singer’, proves to be a smash hit, the head of the studio, R. F. Simpson, decides he has no choice but to convert the new Lockwood and Lamont film,’ The Duelling Cavalier’, into a talkie. The production is beset with difficulties, by far the worst being Lina’s comically grating voice.

After a disastrous test screening, Don’s best friend, Cosmo Brown, comes up with the idea to overdub Lina’s voice and they convince Simpson to turn ‘The Duelling Cavalier’ into ‘The Dancing Cavalier’, a musical film. Meanwhile, Don falls in love with an aspiring actress, Kathy Selden, who is providing the voice for Lina. When Lina finds out, she is furious and does everything possible to sabotage the romance.

RAINING LIVE ONSTAGE
To achieve the iconic rain sequence in this production, WATER SCULPTURES, a UK based company, designed and engineered the efficient and remarkable system which is used in the show.

Two tanks containing 6000 liters of water each, located offstage, and through a series of valves, pumps and interlocks, and nearly half a mile of flexible piping, this water is pumped to a holding tank, where it is slightly warmed for the comfort of the performers. 16 nozzles rigged in the fly tower above the stage create a downpour from above, and at the same time, water is pumped from below the stage to create a pool of water on the specially engineered decking onstage.

This creates the puddles and splashes in the street scene during the well known song and dance number ‘Singin’ in the Rain’.

Whilst a little water is splashed into the first three rows of the auditorium (known as the Splash Zone) during the scene, most of the water is drained back into the holding tanks, ready to be recycled for the next performance.

The water goes through extensive filtration – a sand filter, as well as a UV (Ultraviolet) filter to eliminate any bacteria.

Once the season has closed, the tanks are emptied via hoses to the nearest gardens or lawns near the theatre.

THE SPLASH ZONE
Patrons sitting in these seats will each receive a rain poncho to put on before the big ‘Singin’ In The Rain’ number. Internationally, patrons have rushed to buy these seats and in a hot SA summer, I’m sure people will do the same here!
The Splash Zone is in the first three rows in each theatre – Rows A, B and C. Please be aware of this before making your booking.

This sensational production of SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN sold out on the West End, received unparalleled praise from critics and audiences alike; garnered four Olivier Award nominations and undertook a major UK tour.  The South African cast rehearsed here in Cape Town earlier this year before delighting audiences in Wellington and Auckland.  They then go on to perform in Singapore, Manila and Hong Kong before returning home for seasons in Cape Town and Johannesburg

Adapted from the movie of the same name, this highly acclaimed, brand-new production is set in Hollywood in the waning days of the silent screen era. It focuses on romantic lead Don Lockwood, his sidekick Cosmo Brown, aspiring actress Kathy Selden, and Lockwood’s leading lady Lina Lamont, whose less-than-dulcet vocal tones make her an unlikely candidate for stardom in talking pictures.

The iconic, jaw-dropping choreography of the movie is flawlessly recreated. The sets and costumes are gorgeous. The performers are ‘triple threats’. Those catchy songs that we know are all there – ‘You Stepped Out Of A Dream’’, Make ‘Em Laugh’, ‘Moses Supposes’, ‘You Are My Lucky Star’, ‘Good Morning Good Morning’ and of course, the signature ‘Singin’ In The Rain’. It’s packed full of the charm, romance, comedy and Tinsel Town glamour of one of the world’s best-loved movies. And it rains on stage … as well as in the first three rows!

A knock-’em-dead, MUST SEE musical!
